If you are a found footage lover, then give it a go, I guarantee you will enjoy it. I found myself smiling and then shocked at what was happening. Despite what some reviewers are saying I thought the ending was very satisfying and unexpected.

I also did some googling after watching this movie and it is very obvious that a lot of effort went into research and into ensuring that the film had a realistic vibe. It is one of the most convincing 'mockumentry' type movies I have seen. The acting was great and the build up of suspense while laying out the background and story was fantastic. Santi’s ghost begins to haunt the school. Jaime (Inigo Garces) witnesses the murder, but keeps silent out of fear. Jacinto the caretaker (Eduardo Noriega) murdered Santi, after he accidentally witnessed Jacinto trying to open a hidden safe containing gold. If you enjoy found footage then I think that you would consider this an above average found footage film. This movie takes place during the Spanish Civil War. These types of movies are usually filmed on a budget by inexperienced actors and film makers so why people watching them expect to see superb effects, acting, editing etc is something that I have never understood. I believe the bad reviews that these types of movies receive are due to people who do not have an affection for the genre watching and then reviewing them. I think it is a genre that you either love or hate. Even though Pan’s Labyrinth borrows from the horror genre, The Devil’s Backbone will give you more spooks.I watch a LOT of movies and really enjoy found footage.
However, this film is a more classic horror. Just like Pan’s Labyrinth it contains a young kid living during the Spanish Civil War. The Devil’s Backbone is one of Guillermo del Toro’s best. Then finally, in the climax, the ghost is revealed to all. This identifies the audience with the protagonist (we’re the only one’s who know of the ghost). Next, the protagonist sees the ghost and the rest of the character’s usually don’t believe him. There’s the first ominous sighting early on in the film which goes unnoticed by all of the characters. Each one follows the rhythm written by the many horror films that preceded it. The location is like the wild west and is ripe for the spookiness that unfolds.ĭel Toro perfectly stages the horror scenes. The place is run by an old woman with a wooden leg and an old man who has a love for books and curiosities (typical del Toro style).

The sanctuary is full of young boys left by men and women fighting in the Spanish Civil War. The boy was a member of a small walled sanctuary in the middle of the Spanish desert. One of the bombs falls into the ground, brutally injuring a young boy. People who liked Devils Backbone, Texas also liked.
